Aruba International Airport Renews Its Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation
Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) plays a key role in Aruba’s international connectivity and tourism economy. Having served more than 3.4 million passengers in 2025, AUA continues to develop its infrastructure and services while integrating sustainability into its long-term strategy.
This year, Aruba International Airport renewed its Level 3 “Optimisation” accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme. The process included an independent verification audit conducted by SGS to assess the airport’s emissions inventory and compliance with the programme’s requirements.
The airport began participating in ACA in 2018, and its first Level 1 “Mapping” accreditation was announced in 2020. It subsequently achieved Level 2 “Reduction” in 2021 and Level 3 “Optimisation” in 2023. This progression reflects the development of its carbon management approach, from measuring its carbon footprint to demonstrating emissions reductions and engaging the airport community.
Sustainability is one of AUA’s strategic priorities, with the ambition of becoming one of the most sustainable, safe and future-ready airports in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2030. Its environmental policy promotes continuous improvement in carbon emissions, energy, water, waste, biodiversity and climate resilience, as well as the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the airport community.
Measures implemented include the electrification of equipment, the achievement of LEED certification, the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, the introduction of LED lighting and the installation of solar panels. Together with emissions monitoring and stakeholder collaboration, these initiatives contribute to improving energy efficiency and progressively reducing the airport’s carbon footprint.
Enerion has been providing carbon management consultancy services to Aruba International Airport since 2020, supporting its participation and progression within the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Working closely with the airport’s team, Enerion provides technical support for the accreditation process and contributes to the continuous improvement of its carbon management practices.
